I'll be reviewing the newly updated KakaoMap application. With version 4.0, iOS finally started receiving benefits too, but in fact there was a lot of talk when it launched on Android. There was much talk that the design is decent in its own way but it loses a lot in terms of convenience. On the iOS side, I tend not to use Naver Map much and had kept using Daum Map, so I was hoping for an app renewal that brings over the map data well. Let's take a look first.
This is the startup screen. Nothing special. They brought over the icon as is, with the only difference being the 'yellow background'..
First, the maps that currently properly support 'tilting' are about 'Apple Maps' and 'Google Maps,' and the fact that this map also supports 3D and thus supports tilting came across as decent. Because it makes setting the 'direction' easier.
'Hot place recommendations' clearly seems to link with Kakao-side services. Not bad. Currently Apple, Google Maps, and Naver all have the function of linking the 'reviews' registered on their respective maps. A basic feature.
I don't really understand the recommendation algorithm either. Can't evaluate it.
The area I'm in is over there, so I came here for now.
When I pressed the menu button at the top left, this came up, and one regrettable point is that I wish they'd get rid of this family-app thing.. I'd like them to put frequently used items here in the settings instead. Promoting family apps doesn't mean people will use that more, right?
This was an area I'd set as a favorite back when I used Daum Map (that star), so I'd been worried about whether it would survive or whether I'd have to set favorites again, but it survived.
The screen that appears while searching looks like this. Quite clean. With more flat design elements than before, readability has definitely improved. The iOS version of Daum Map was, after all, using a UI from quite a long time ago (probably at least 5 years ago), so it was about time for a change..
If you move it to the right like this, bus information and stop information come up. It's pretty nice, more than I expected. That feature seems decent. It's easy to identify nearby stops, you can figure out where you need to go, and having bus routes come up is nice too.
The fact that within the app it supports Road View / Sky View / traffic info / CCTV / bike lanes / topographic map / cadastral map / 3D Sky View is, I think, a much-improved part compared to the previous Daum Map. I just hope the app doesn't get heavy.
