The truth is that many people, myself included, are middling sorts. These middling sorts each carry, a little, a wish for someone to show them attention. So in order to receive attention, the 'middling me' must at the very least cultivate refinement, build up charm, store away plenty of conversation topics, and extend attention to others. When you express interest in someone, an ordinary person, because they wanted to receive such interest, tends to fiddle with the attention they've received and return it nicely, while few are those who would rebuff it. So diligently building up charm and giving to others is the only method—a method belonging only to middling sorts—of making someone come to like you. But many people just wait, doing nothing in particular, for someone to appear. The truth is, for such people there doesn't seem to be much of a connection that will appear. That was the biggest thought I had while reading fortunes all day. This was the kind of regret I felt as the one reading the fortunes.
