Smetana's cycle of symphonic poems, which established Czech national music, is a very familiar piece even if you don't know the title.We usually call the Czech region 'the land of the Bohemians,' but this 'Bohemian' actually refers to Eastern Europe—that is, to souls who, having lost their nation
against their will, wander about.
Though deaf like Beethoven, I praise Smetana's music, which expressed the character of 'national music' in the music of that time more than anyone else.
